Modern Warfare 3 August DLC Review

Posted by Peter Carpenter | 07 Aug 2012 |

This month is Chaos.

Today, Premium Elite members received another round of DLC for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 in the form of two Special Ops Missions and a new Chaos Mode. For everyone else, this new content will be included in Content Collection #3, which is available on August 9th for 1200 MS Points. So let’s take a look what we’re getting this month.

What You Get

The first Special Ops Mission is Light ‘Em Up, and it takes place at Makarov’s Castle where a VIP has been kidnapped and now it’s up to us to rescue him. First we have to control a helicopter, while also killing enemies below to force them to drop intel, then get out and collect the intel that they dropped. Next you move through the Castle to locate the VIP and escort him back to the helicopter. It’s one of the longer Special Ops missions, which is great, clocking in at around 15 minutes on Regular. It’s weird to think that 15 minutes of game time is long, but that’s life in the Special Ops world. The second Special Ops Mission is Special Delivery, which has you behind enemy lines searching for the crew of a helicopter that has crashed. To help stay alive while you search for survivors, you will have a helicopter escort that not only kills enemies, but drops different Care Packages for you as well. Special Delivery is a little tougher than Light ‘Em Up since it features a ton of Juggernauts, but you can pick up the Barrett .50Cal at the start, which takes them down with ease.

This month Infinity Ward have a special treat for us and it’s called Chaos Mode. This is a new Special Ops mode, which can be played solo or with another player either online or offline. The goal is to kill as many enemies as you can, quickly enough to keep increasing your combo to see how high of a score you can earn. Each round starts with two minutes on a clock but as long as you keep increasing your combo, you can continue to play once the clock reaches zero. There are weapon and grenade pick-ups all over the map, and you’ll receive special perks for earning higher combos which help keep you alive a little longer. Chaos Mode isn’t just a clever name, as it plays at an insane pace, with enemies all around you, just waiting to die for your combo. They throw everything from Juggernauts and Dogs, to Soldiers with Chemical Packs on their back in your way and there is never a dull moment. I don’t know how much of it I will play before it gets old, since it can only be played on four maps (Resistance, Village, Underground and Dome), but I’ve had a lot of fun with it so far.

Verdict

Even if it only included the new Chaos Mode, the August DLC Drop is one of the best yet, and since it’s free for premium Elite members there’s no reason not to get it. For everyone else, this batch of DLC will be included in Content Collection #3 on August 9th and in my opinion is one of the best reasons to buy to it.

Price: Free for premium Elite members. 1200 MS Pts as part of Content Collection #3 for non-premium members.
Release Date: August 7th, 2012 for premium and August 9th, 2012 for non-premium.
