Dragon’s Dogma Will Have an Easy Mode Patched In

Posted by Scott Grant | 02 Aug 2012 |

And a new, longer Demo.

Capcom announced, earlier in the week, that Dragon’s Dogma has sold over one million copies, world wide, and that they are aiming to turn this game into a franchise. While one million in world wide sales isn’t bad for a new IP, the game has struggled outside of Japan. Capcom seem to think that this is because of the difficulty so they will be patching in an ‘Easy Mode.’

Dragons Dogma Easy Mode

On August 6th, a new patch will be pushed to all platforms that will allow you to switch your game of Dragon’s Dogma to Easy Mode at any time. Capcom are also working to release a new demo that will allow players to try Dragon’s Dogma up to the point of the first major boss battle with the Hydra.

While I think the extended demo is a great idea, the addition of Easy Mode is a little misguided. I didn’t find Dragon’s Dogma particularly hard and what I really think it needs is a fast travel system. Exploration is one thing, but having to walk for half an hour just to do a side quest really kills your desire to do anything but the main story missions. If Capcom really listened to the community, they would know that everyone is clamoring for a better fast travel system.

Anyway, there you have it, you’ll soon be able to get an extended trial of Dragon’s Dogma and you can read our Review here.

Disappointing. Even 5mos after the last posting on this article, Capcom still hasn’t listened to the consumer base. I wanted to really like this game! I enjoyed the graphics, didn’t find it particularly hard on the default settings, and so on. What killed it for me was the lack of a decent fast travel system. There is nothing worse than a 30 to 40 min walk just to do a side quest. What makes it more annoying are the enemies that kept spawning, I began memorizing the spawn locations and enemy type/numbers every time I had to go back through the same areas which really took me out of the experience. Additionally, the Pawn’s keep saying the same three pointless lines over and over with no way to turn it off. For me, it makes no sense to create/advertise epic monsters and battles when you spend 85% of the game wondering around a world doing pretty much nothing. There is a reason why other RPG’s are more successful and a big part of that success are the fast travel systems which allow the player to dictate their own pace and get right to the action. Again, even in an open world RPG, a Japanese developer finds a way to try and force the gamer to play the title a certain way and adds tediously long sections in an effort to increase play time.

As a gamer who is pretty bad a video games I approve of the easy patch. I love the fantasy worlds that games create and the fun that I can have with them but usually I just end up dying a lot

What the game really needs is an option to turn down or turn off pawn comments and the ability to fast travel to locations you’ve already visited.Backtracking sucks, it doesn’t make the game harder, it just makes it more repetitive because you have to tread through areas you’ve just been too.Forcing the player to backtrack is a mistake a lot of developers make when creating open-world games.

I agree the game needs a fast travel system. Kills my joy to do side quests. The easy patch tho is a horrible idea. From different games and MMOs I’v been playing recently it seems the new gamer generation likes everything to be easy or handed to them.
