More tessellation, more lens flare.
The folks at Crytek are getting technical in their latest video showing off just how beautiful Crysis 3 looks while running on the CryEngine 3. They’re throwing around terms like Real-Time Volumetric Cloud Shadows and Pixel Accurate Displacement Mapping. Also, we can’t forget Top Secret Tessellated Toad Technology.
I know these sound like highly technical, and thoroughly made up, terms but it’s just Crytek’s way of saying that the shadow cast by a cloud will be accurate based on the size of the cloud, and adjusted in real time. These are the kind of things they care about, and do very well. I know I’ve written recently about the issues that arise if the whole industry shoots for photorealistic graphics, but Crytek are the flip side of this coin. They built their reputation on stunning visuals and thrive on creating scenes like the ones you’ll see in the video below.
