Avengers Assemble! But stop bumping the table.
Marvel Pinball: Avengers Chronicles is the newest collection of tables for Zen Studios Pinball FX 2, and will be released this week on both Xbox Live and the Playstation Network. I was lucky enough to get my hands on them a bit early and have been enjoying them quite a bit. Some, more than others.
What You Get
Avengers Chronicles comes with four new Marvel themed tables; World War Hulk, Fear Itself, The Infinity Gauntlet and The Avengers. All four tables are well designed and fun to play, but The Infinity Gauntlet and The Avengers stand out for some cool little features. The Avengers table, while mostly a straightforward pinball table, actually mixes things up by including six balls to pick from, with each one themed after a different Avenger. These balls aren’t just cool to look at though, as they have different abilities as well, such as Captain America who gets Ball Saves and Combo bonuses and Hawkeye who gets Kickback and Skillshot bonuses. Depending on which ball you pick, each game is a little different, which is nice for the replay value.
The Infinity Gauntlet table, which features Silver Surfer and Adam Warlock doing battle with Thanos, has different effects that can occur when you activate one of the Infinity Gems on the table, such as the Mind Gem which causes the paddles to always be flipped up, and you have to press LT or RT to force them down to bounce up and hit the ball again, and the Reality Gem that actually flips the table upside down while you play, making things extra difficult. I actually played The Infinity Gauntlet first, and had a really hard time stopping to check out the other tables. It’s features like these that help bring you back to the table and keep you there.
Verdict
For those who love playing Pinball FX 2, but need some interesting new tables, Avengers Chronicles will fill that void and is worth the 800 MS Point price tag. It’s mostly due to the neat features in The Avengers and Infinity Gauntlet tables, but the other two tables are still fun to play.
