Indie Game Spotlight: Pixelbit Helicopter Challenge

Posted by Scott | 17 Jun 2011 |

RC Helicopter enthusiasts now have a video game.

Have you ever been flying your RC helicopter around the living room and wished you had some rings hanging from the ceiling? Too lazy to make them yourself? Me too. Instead, I would recommend grabbing Pixelbet Helicopter Challenge. Pixelbit re-creates the rooms of your average everyday house to use as maps then offers seven challenges in each room. The object is to guide your helicopter to collect stars, fly through rings and, in later levels, shoot targets.

Shhh! I'm hunting terrorists.

Your objectives will be listed on the left side of the screen and once they are all complete you will have to land your choppa on the heli-pad. The helicopter is controlled using the thumbsticks. Moving the right stick up is your throttle and also will tilt the helicopter left and right. The left stick will rotate you in place. These controls sound simple but actually can take some time to master. If you run into anything the blades will break and you will have to start the level over. Each level is timed and you will be given a score based on the time you completed the challenge in and your landing.

Select your machine.

Pixelbit Helicopter Challenge offers you a selection of a few different helicopters that you unlock as you progress through the challenges and levels. When you unlock new machines, you can also go back and try to best your time on previous challenges. This will be necessary as the later challenges are a lot more complex than the starting ones and sometimes you will need a specific time on a previous challenge to unlock the next one.

For 80 MS points, I had a lot of fun with Pixelbit Helicopter challenge. If you have a dollar and an afternoon to kill, I recommend checking this one out.
